Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger endorses Wes Moore for Maryland Governor

Coveted endorsement builds on Moore’s unparalleled coalition in final days of primary election

Ruppersberger is the third member of Maryland’s federal delegation to endorse Moore, joining Hoyer, Mfume

TOWSON, Md. (July 11, 2021) – Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-02) endorsed Democratic candidate Wes Moore to be the next governor of Maryland today at a press conference at the Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson, Maryland.

The coveted endorsement adds to Moore’s unparalleled coalition in Baltimore County as Ruppersberger becomes the third member of Maryland’s federal delegation, as well as the third former Baltimore County executive to endorse Moore in the race for governor.

“When I asked Wes Moore why he wanted to be governor, he simply said he wanted to help people. That’s why I got into politics and it’s the reason I am proudly endorsing him today,” Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-02) said. “I know he will hit the ground running, providing steady and smart leadership focusing on the basics of good government, like safe streets, good schools and quality jobs. Wes believes in the promise of Baltimore and has a plan for its challenges. I encourage every Maryland Democrat to vote for Wes Moore today.”

Ruppersberger is serving his ninth term in Congress representing Maryland’s 2nd District. Prior to his tenure in the United States House of Representatives, Ruppesberger served two terms as County Executive for Baltimore County, and two terms on the Baltimore County Council. Rep. Ruppesberger currently sits on the powerful Appropriations Committee, and he previously served on the House Intelligence Committee, where he was the first Democratic Freshman appointed to the committee.

“I am humbled to receive the endorsement of Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger, who has an incredible legacy of impact and leadership not only in the Baltimore region, not only in Maryland, but for our country,” Wes Moore said. “If I have the honor to be elected governor, I will work with leaders like Congressman Ruppersberger and other members of our federal delegation to deliver the leadership, investment, and partnership that families in the Baltimore region and across Maryland deserve.”

Ruppersberger’s endorsement of Moore augments the campaign’s enthusiastic support in Baltimore County, where Moore’s unparalleled coalition includes the support of Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates Adrienne Jones (District 10), Baltimore County Council Chair and Councilmember Julian Jones (District 4), Sen. Delores Kelley (District 10) and other Baltimore County Leaders. Ruppersberger joins Former Baltimore County Executive Don Mohler and Former Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith as the third Baltimore County Executive to endorse Moore in the race for governor.

Moore, who is the only candidate in the race to earn endorsements from members of Maryland’s federal delegation, also now earns his third endorsement from a sitting U.S. representative following endorsements from U.S. Majority Leader Rep. Steny Hoyer (MD-05) and Rep. Kweisi Mfume (MD-07).

The coveted endorsement comes as the Wes Moore for Maryland campaign scales up its effort to translate the unparalleled enthusiasm for Moore’s candidacy into a historic victory in the primary election. This announcement follows a new poll released last week showing Moore in a dead heat for first place in the final sprint of the race.

The campaign is making an aggressive media push running ads across Maryland, including an ad voiced by Oprah Winfrey, and gearing up their robust field operation to channel Moore’s passionate grassroots supporters to the polls. The Wes Moore for Maryland governor campaign has reached out to over 1.5 million voters, made nearly 200,000 phone calls, sent over 1 million text messages, and knocked over 300,000 doors with endorsers and allies.
