Veterans’ Political Group Backs Moore for Governor

VoteVets PAC, a progressive political action committee led by military veterans that endorses fellow veterans or national security experts who are running for office as Democrats, announced Wednesday that it has backed former nonprofit CEO Wes Moore in the 2022 gubernatorial primary. Moore is a former Army captain and paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne division who was deployed to Afghanistan from 2005 to 2006.

“Leadership, accountability, and community are three words Wes Moore embodies,” said Will Fischer, an Iraq War veteran and senior adviser to VoteVets. “From leading troops in combat to being a successful small business CEO and the head of one of the largest anti-poverty organizations in the country, Wes Moore has stepped up time and again to lead.”

VoteVets was organized during the the height of the Iraq War, to buttress Democratic candidates who questioned the mission of the war and were being labeled unpatriotic by Republicans. An endorsement from the PAC typically brings an independent spending campaign, fundraising help and get-out-the-vote efforts.

“I’m honored to receive the endorsement of VoteVets today,” Moore said. “My service leading troops in combat with the 82nd Airborne division taught me critical lessons I lean on today. I’m grateful to VoteVets for fighting for strong leaders in public office and proud to stand with them as we build a Maryland that leaves no one behind.”

Moore is one of nine Democrats seeking to replace term-limited Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) next year.
