FOR MARYLAND

MEET WES

Wes Moore is the 63rd Governor of Maryland – a combat veteran, bestselling author, former nonprofit CEO, and a relentless fighter for economic opportunity and equity. Though his work has taken him across the country, Wes and his family have always remained rooted in Maryland, where his commitment to service and community began.

Before taking office, Wes served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division where he led soldiers in combat in Afghanistan. It was there he came to understand that service will save us.

After, Wes launched and led BridgeEdU, which reinvented the first year of college and increased the opportunities for underserved students. He also served as CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, one of the largest poverty fighting organizations in the country. Throughout his career, Wes has worked to build pathways to support education, middle and working class families, and opportunity for all – founding and supporting orgs dedicated to helping our young people succeed.

In 2022, Wes made history when he was elected Maryland’s first Black governor and only the third Black governor elected in U.S. history. He ran for office with no prior political experience, but with a clear vision, a deep sense of urgency, and a background that reflected it all.

As Governor, Wes has prioritized reducing child poverty, supporting the middle class and investing in education. Under his leadership, Maryland has made first-in-the-nation efforts to fight child poverty, made record investments in public education, and taken bold steps to build an economy that works for everyone. He turned a structural budget deficit into a surplus, turned one of the highest unemployment rates in the country into one of the lowest, and cut taxes for veterans and middle class families.

Wes has also prioritized public safety, and right now, homicides in Baltimore are at their lowest levels in 50 years. In moments of crisis – including the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge – his administration acted swiftly, reopening the Port of Baltimore in just 11 weeks, far ahead of expectations.

As federal leaders prioritize billionaires and large corporations, Wes continues to stand with and fight for the middle class. Wes is driven by the same purpose that brought him into office in the first place: to make Maryland’s public schools the best in America, to end childhood poverty once and for all, and to ensure more Marylanders can afford to live, work, and thrive in the state they love.

Of all the titles Wes has held, the two he’s proudest of are husband and father.
