Governor Wes Moore Statement on the Retirement of Steny Hoyer from Congress

Maryland Governor Wes Moore released the following statement regarding today’s announcement by Congressman and Former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer that he will not seek re-election in 2026:

“When I was twenty-seven years old and serving with the Army in Afghanistan, a Maryland flag arrived at base camp from overseas. Inside was a note signed by Congressman Steny Hoyer. We had never met before. Still, he took the time to let me know he had my back–and that home was never too far away.

“It was the beginning of a lifelong friendship with a true Maryland Giant–someone who has dedicated his career to representing our communities with distinction, courage, integrity, and heart.

“Steny Hoyer’s fingerprints have been on countless pieces of historic policy achievements over a career that has spanned nearly six decades–from making health care more affordable at home to standing up for human rights around the world. But his true genius resides not simply in the grand American story he has helped to write, but in the many quiet moments of service and support he has given to all of us.

“Marylanders love Steny Hoyer because he saw us first. When others looked away. When many felt left behind. Leader Hoyer always saw us. We are grateful for his service and wish him all the best in this next chapter.”
