Gov. Moore To Speak On “The Work of Patriotism” Tomorrow At 11:00 AM
Today, Governor Wes Moore previewed his July 4th address “The Work Of Patriotism,” and highlighted his efforts to encourage Democrats to not cede patriotism to Trump.

Gov. Moore: I want to highlight the fact that the United States is still the greatest experiment in world history, that there was nothing like it before.

Gov. Moore: Now we understand that our history is complex. We understand that our history is we understand that our history is complicated, that it has been ugly at times. But I also know there has been this ark that patriotism and the work of patriotism has really inspired.
Tomorrow I will be giving an address as the first African-American governor in the history of the State of Maryland, and I’ll be giving it from our state house which was partially built by the hands of enslaved people.

Gov. Moore We’re here talking about how the United States was a gift, but for many people in this country what they’re seeing is a grift. They’re seeing a president who has now profited by billions of dollars.
We are seeing policies that are cutting people off of health care, policies that are ripping children away from food assistance, all while we give billionaire’s tax cuts and so the frustration that people feel, it is a very real frustration, I understand it.

Gov. Moore: I thought it was important for us to be able to help, to tell a story that our nation’s history has been deeply complicated, deeply uneven, deeply unfair for many people. However, there were patriots. There were willing people who were willing to put the flag of our country on their shoulder and to put the hope of this country, this country, in their hearts and to say, I’m willing to fight for something better for tomorrow. And that’s the message that I wanted to be able to share.

Gov. Moore: I don’t care if you are democratic or republican or you are indifferent about politics, but what patriotism is, is that we’re willing to fight for the hope of each other. We’re willing to fight for the hope of what tomorrow can be. And so actually, I don’t think patriotism versus nationalism necessarily a political argument, but I do think that patriotism is something that really helps to embody what makes this country so unique in the first place.

Gov. Moore: Tomorrow is about all of us. And so actually, I think what we’re doing and the message that I’m sharing is to democrats, republicans and to anyone else, uh, let’s not forget how amazing this american journey has been. And let’s not forget that if we can find ways of continuing to work together and understand the assignment of this moment, that we do know that our better days are still ahead of us.

Gov. Moore: I still look at what happened in Maryland, where we had our elections the same day that New York had it. And I had a whole slate of what we call leave no one behind slate of candidates who were wildly successful and who did not conform to a political ideology. They just simply wanted to disrupt the status quo. And they’re just saying the status quo is not working for us. So let’s elect candidates who are actually working to undo that.
CBS: The United States Is Still The Greatest Experiment In World History
Gov. Moore: The United States is still the greatest experiment in world history. Uh there was nothing like it before and in many ways there still is nothing like it to this day. That our history has been uneven. It’s been complicated. It’s been challenging, but it’s still been pretty remarkable.
But patriotism requires work. That it’s not just something that we accept, it’s something that we have to protect. And so, the message that I have for our people now is that while there is a lot of darkness–we want to be a foil to the darkness. While there’s a lot of challenge, we want to be an answer to that challenge. That we really are a pretty remarkable place. But we’re a remarkable
place because we’ve had patriots who’ve been willing to sacrifice and patriots who’ve been willing to serve and that really is the message that service and sacrifice will save us.

Gov. Moore: The pathway to the American dream is creating pathways to work, wages, and wealth. That’s what people are asking for, right? I want a good job that pays a fair wage and gives me the opportunity to own more than I owe–something to pass on to my children besides debt. And if you look at what we’ve done inside of the state of Maryland, we have now passed some of the most aggressive uh housing policies to be able to increase more housing, increase more inventory because housing has been in our nation’s history one of the most effective ways to create long-term wealth for people. But ironically, home and security has been one of the greatest drivers into poverty. And so if you can fix housing, if you can create more inventory, we did in Maryland.
So I could not agree more that the frustration that people feel right now, it is real that we’re watching rising prices. We’re watching how the price of materials continues to rise because of tariffs.

Gov. Moore: I spend all day long in our communities and I can tell you from our folks, they’re not talking about what wing of the party that anyone’s from. They’re saying who’s actually going to disrupt the status quo? Who’s actually going to be able to address the fact that everything is more expensive? We’re watching gas that has been more expensive now for these past 10 weeks over a dollar. We’re watching how grocery prices are continuing to skyrocket. They’re not saying, “Oh, I want someone from this party or from this wing of the party to be able to address it.”
In this last election, we endorsed an entire slate of candidates, the leave no one behind slate. And in that slate, there was a progressive lawmaker from Montgomery County and there was a prosecutor from Baltimore County. And people say, well, what do they have in common? The answer is there is no ideology that they have in common, but they understand disrupting the status quo.
Scripps: Patriotism Is A Belief In An Idea And An Ideal
Gov. Moore: I think and oftentimes people conflate them where when I think about patriotism,
patriotism is a belief in an idea and an ideal nationalism is belief in a person or a group and nationalism is small–patriotism is big. And when you think about the celebration of 250 years of the greatest experiment in world history, which is the United States of America. You know, it’s an important moment to be able to say that we have conquered great things as a country. We’ve had a deeply uneven history, but it’s one that still that we continue to try to make and perfect into a more perfect union.

Gov. Moore: Diversity has actually made us stronger. And I think every bit of that it is so easy for so many institutions to walk away from the dei programs? Because it’s different. And because it’s something that a lot of people aren’t accustomed to. You know, I’m not a person who believes and comes up with different ways of dividing the pie. I’m a person who believes that wants us to have a chance to create a bigger pie–that if we can great pathways to work wages and wealth for not just some people, but all people, you’re going to create a better society because you have more people that actually invested in the interest of what it is that we’re supposed to do.

Matt Gregory: When pressed on whether he believes the concept of patriotism has been co-opted by a single movement, the Governor did not hold back.
Gov. Moore: Anyone who can think that somehow some political party has the market on patriotism cornered, then, by definition, they’re trying to hijack it because patriotism is not red nor blue.
Matt Gregory: Instead, Moore argued that real patriotism is found in everyday American communities.
Gov. Moore: Patriotism is the person who puts on the uniform of this country, or the person who wakes up and educates our kids, or the person who coaches Little League, or the person who makes sure the trash is picked up, or the first responder that responds.
