Last week, two Frederick Public School teachers wrote an opinion piece highlighting Governor Moore’s commitment to Frederick’s public schools and the $87 million investment he’s made there to ensure every child receives the best public education possible.
Governor Wes Moore announced yesterday in Frederick that he will invest a record $10.2 billion in funding for K-12 schools through his proposed FY 2027 budget–marking what would be the fourth straight year of record funding for Maryland’s schools under the Moore-Miller administration.
In his first year, the governor committed to tackling Maryland’s teacher shortage crisis by passing the Maryland Educator Shortage Reduction Act, and now, just three years later, the teacher vacancy rate has dropped 58%. And, just last year he led the charge last year to put a historic $9.8 billion investment in K–12 schools.
These record investments and historic actions are showing results across the state, with recent reporting showing that statewide, nearly every single grade has made improvements in reading and math scores. And, Maryland’s public schools have improved for the third consecutive year, according to the latest Maryland School Report Card.
Here’s what Marylanders are reading in Frederick:

We have taught in Frederick for a combined 47 years. Never have we seen our school system and our community thrive like they have under Gov. Wes Moore.
Since Moore came into office, he has shown the people of Frederick County that he is dedicated to the success of our young people.
In just under three years, he’s provided $87 million in school construction for our home, in addition to the three straight years of record funding statewide for K-12 schools.
That funding means better schools for our children, better resources for our educators, and more teachers in the classroom.
In the 2022-2023 school year, there were 2,144 teacher vacancies across the state. Now that number sits at 886 vacancies just a couple of years later, a 59% reduction.
Those numbers are life-changing for our students, but the governor is not stopping there. He’s doubling down.
He recently announced a $19 million teacher recruitment program to not only hire more teachers, but to also incentivize more men into the profession, as well.
This initiative will expand staffing at our schools, increase diversity in the profession, and establish apprenticeships across the state.
In Maryland, we have a governor who truly believes in our public schools — a leader who makes the necessary investments to ensure that all of our students, regardless of their ZIP code, have the opportunity to receive the best public education possible.
We couldn’t be more thankful for the work of Moore. We know that these investments will change the lives of countless students in Frederick.
