Former Governor Parris Glendening endorses Wes Moore for Maryland Governor

Glendening, who served two terms as Governor and three terms as Prince George’s County Executive, becomes latest leader to endorse Moore

Moore momentum continues with highest profile endorsement in Maryland of this campaign cycle

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Dec. 15, 2021) – In the shadow of the statehouse where he served two terms as Governor, Former Governor of Maryland Parris Glendening called on Marylanders to support Wes Moore in the 2022 election for Governor.

Glendening becomes the first former Governor to endorse in the crowded Democratic primary field and the highest profile official in Maryland to endorse in the Democratic field this cycle.

“I am inspired by Wes Moore’s commitment to expand work, wages, and wealth; and the comprehensive policy plans he has detailed to make them a reality for families in Maryland,” Glendening said. “I know executive leadership. I served three terms as county executive in Prince George’s County. Two terms as Governor of Maryland. I know what this job takes. And when I look at the field of candidates and the challenges we face, I know whose leadership I trust – Wes Moore’s.”

Glendening served as Governor of Maryland from 1995 to 2003 and County Executive of Prince George’s County from 1983–1994 — the first county executive in the history of Maryland to serve three terms. His legacy includes his innovation of smart growth and his work as a champion for climate and a more inclusive economy.

“Governor Glendening is one of the most consequential and effective Governors Maryland has ever had, and I am honored to have him as a part of this movement we are building to create work, wages, and wealth for families in Maryland,” Moore said. “The impacts of his pioneering work on smart growth, environmental protection, and seeing oftentimes left behind places in our state has made Maryland better. He leveraged the diversity of our state as one of our greatest assets, and I am proud to have the confidence of this remarkable Maryland leader. We have seen our vision resonate with many across Maryland, and together, we are going to continue this people-powered momentum and this campaign to address generational challenges with bold, future facing leadership.”

Glendening is the latest in a string of elected officials and Maryland Democratic Party leaders to endorse the Moore-Miller ticket, which has demonstrated remarkable statewide momentum in the past several weeks.

“Gov. Glendening is a legend in Maryland politics and a stalwart progressive who knows good governance and leadership,” Candidate for Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller said. “We are so proud to welcome him to this diverse and rapidly growing coalition that will return to Annapolis in January 2023.”

In endorsing Moore, Glendening joins former chairs of the Maryland Democratic Party Michael Cryor and Susie Turnbull; VoteVetsPAC, one of the top veterans advocacy organizations in the country; The Baltimore Fire Officers Union Local 964; Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman; Sen. Obie Patterson (District 27); Sen. Delores Kelley (District 10); Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando (At Large); Sen.
