Governor Moore Continues To Address Maryland Teacher Shortage

Since Governor Moore Took Office Maryland’s Teacher Vacancy Rate Has Dropped By 25%

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Last week, Governor Moore announced Maryland’s first state-sponsored registered apprenticeship program in an effort to continue bringing down the state’s teacher vacancy rate by providing more affordable opportunities for aspiring teachers.

“Since taking office Governor Moore has brought down the teacher vacancy rate by 25%”, said Senior Communications Adviser Carter Elliott, IV. “Governor Moore’s efforts to pass the Maryland Educator Shortage Reduction Act along with three straight years of record funding for public schools has put more teachers in the classroom and now statewide, nearly every single grade has made improvements in reading and math scores.”

For three years in a row, Governor Moore has put record funding into Maryland’s public schools. He continued the fight to ensure our children have access to the best public education possible by leading the charge this year to put a historic $9.8 billion investment this year in K–12 schools. In his first year, the governor committed to tackling Maryland’s teacher shortage crisis by passing the Maryland Educator Shortage Reduction Act, and now, just two years later, the teacher vacancy rate has dropped 25%. These record investments and historic actions are showing results across the state, with recent reporting showing that statewide, nearly every single grade has made improvements in reading and math scores.
